Two years ago, I began a business of roasting, grinding and packing coffee. My first customers were family and friends who gave me great feedback. This encouraged me to expand my marketing efforts through my social media channels.
In the process, many of my respondents, but mostly men, posed a question to me: “Does coffee really work?”
At first, I ignored the question mostly because I had no idea what they were on about! However their persistency got me thinking.
What I was sure of, was that my product, Organokawa, was a great blend of Arabica and Robusta coffee beans that has a refreshing distinctive taste and an aroma that leaves one with a sense of pleasure.
However, it was when I began an online correspondence with one Okello, (not actual name), that this question became much clearer. I was aware that Okello had recently purchased a pack of Organokawa and was carrying out a series of experiments.
Out of the blue, he sent me a perplexing message, telling me he was not seeing results. He then went on to ask how frequently he should drink his coffee in order to achieve the desired outcome.
Still quite ignorant about the matter at hand, I advised him to take a cup in the morning and one in the evening, cautioning that excess consumption can deprive him of sleep during the night. A couple of days later I see another text from Okello: “It works!”
He said he had followed my instructions to the letter and bingo! It was at that moment that it all made sense to me as well. Apparently, the coffee served to enhance Okello’s sexual prowess!
By now and well intrigued myself, I did some research of my own. In the past, most Baganda men of central Uganda were often seen munching roasted coffee beans (Emmwaanyi). Apparently, it was believed that this kept them mentally alert, but also did wonders for their libido.
Although the habit is not as widespread today, as western tastes impinge on traditional ways, it is still common in rural areas. On occasion however, it is not strange to see elderly men hawking roasted coffee beans wrapped up in dry banana fiber in the congested streets of Kampala. The customers tend to be equally elderly.
On the other hand, it is also interesting to note that from long ago, women were discouraged from drinking coffee. The main reason put forward, was that the beverage affected them negatively. This is a belief or myth that I strongly query and several studies have been done to discount this discriminatory notion.
Coffee boosts libido in women: A 2010 study done by the University of Texas found strong evidence that caffeine was effective in boosting female libido. According to the study, the known effects of caffeine, such as increased heart rate and blood pressure, are among the factors that make female sexual arousal easier. Of course, coffee does not create sexual desire (that’s all in the mind), but it does make things a little easier for some people.
Coffee can have an aphrodisiac effect on those who do not drink it often: As mentioned earlier, caffeine consumption has many immediate effects on the body, including secretion of several of hormones and increased concentration. But the more we drink it, the higher the tolerance and the milder are the effects. However, according to scientists, if you are not a regular coffee drinker, it can be a powerful aphrodisiac, especially for women.
Coffee helps treat erectile dysfunction: Erectile dysfunction is a problem that affects millions of men around the world. Scientists note that coffee consumption reduces the symptoms of erectile dysfunction, on the one hand by increasing blood flow and on the other hand by increasing testosterone levels in the blood. Of course, coffee is not a solution, and erectile dysfunction (which can have psychogenic or organic causes) should always be treated with expert advice.
According to the study, authors of the published work found that men who consumed between 85 and 170 milligrams of caffeine per day were actually 42 percent less likely to feel the impact of erectile dysfunction.
Coffee increases endurance and duration of sexual intercourse: Coffee increases endurance, and there are many experts who recommend drinking coffee before going to the gym. With many couples experiencing problems in bed related to the duration of sexual intercourse, it is almost certain that a cup of coffee before can help. Sex can become extremely tiring for the body, but a mild stimulant like caffeine can sometimes help.
Coffee reduces stress: Contrary to popular belief, coffee consumption reduces stress levels, especially in cases of chronic stress, while also reducing negative emotions (depression and dysthymia).
